The El Senillar Project....

The Bird Identification and Survey Group

Group Coordinator, Nigel Bentley

Introduction

In addition to supplying fresh water, food and nesting material for resident and summer-visiting bird species, the lagoon reserve provides a welcome temporary resting and feeding opportunity for a wide variety of species on spring and autumn migration. Furthermore, there are other species that visit the reserve only during the winter months to take advantage of the relatively mild climatic conditions at this time of year.

Aims

The aims of this group are to record:

  1. The different bird species that visit or are resident in the reserve and its immediate surroundings.
  2. The number of each species present.
  3. Any species that may attempt to breed and whether or not breeding was successful.

Sightings are logged, verified, and then compiled into a survey for the particular period of the year. (See Bird Surveys)

Help for Group Members

For those who have only a limited knowledge of how to identify the many bird species that use the lagoon there is an ongoing programme of on-site guidance from the more experienced members of the team.
