A Land for All of Us

The Olive Grove Land Stewardship Project

We have been asked to look after an olive grove in Beniarbeig. The plan is to bring the grove back into productive use and when harvested use the olives to make our own olive oil. It is intended for this to be a "fun" project and give those who take part an insight into what is a major agricultural activity in the Region of Valencia.

The story so far. . . . . .

In February 2012, we started our activities . . . .The grove had not been touched for   7 years. Seventeen members, under the guidance of Dick Handscombe  managed to cut back the suckers and put the trees into a state fit for pruning on the first day . . A second visit involved pruning the trees.

In March, there was a third session when the vast pile of prunings was burnt.

In April we sprayed the trees with a natural fungicide.

In mid October we harvested the first crop of olives.

We have continued this routine for the 2013, 2014, 2015 and the current year 2016.

The crops have been variable as the long drought has continued since 2013.
